Convert PDF to JPG on iPhone: Free Methods Without an App
The fastest way to convert a PDF to JPG on iPhone is to open our free PDF to JPG converter in Safari, pick the PDF from the Files app, and tap Convert to JPG. Every page becomes its own JPG image that you can save to Files or Photos. There is nothing to install and no account to create.
Method 1: Convert PDF to JPG in Safari (recommended)
This method works on any recent iPhone or iPad and converts all pages in one go. The converter runs on PDF.js inside Safari, so your document stays on your phone.
- Open thepdfbuddy.netlify.app/pdf-to-jpg in Safari.
- Tap the upload box. In the menu that appears, choose the option to browse files, then find your PDF in iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, Downloads, or a connected service such as Google Drive.
- Tap Convert to JPG. A thumbnail appears for each page as it is converted.
- Tap Download under the page you want and confirm the download. To save every page, tap Download All to get one ZIP file.
- Open the Files app and go to the Downloads folder (or wherever Safari saves downloads on your phone) to find the JPG or ZIP.
How to save the JPG to the Photos app
Safari downloads go to Files, not Photos. To move a page into your photo library, open the JPG in the Files app, tap the Share button, and choose the option to save the image. Alternatively, before you download, press and hold a page thumbnail on the converter and choose the option to save it to Photos. The exact menu wording changes slightly between iOS versions, but both routes save the full-size image.
How to open the ZIP of all pages
When you use Download All, you get a file called pdf_pages.zip. Tap it in the Files app and iOS expands it into a folder with page_1.jpg, page_2.jpg and so on. From there you can select several images and share or save them together.
Method 2: Use the Shortcuts app
If you convert PDFs to images often, Apple's free Shortcuts app can automate it. Shortcuts includes an action that turns PDF pages into images and an action that converts images to JPEG. Action names below are as they appear in recent iOS versions; if one looks different on your phone, search the action list for "PDF" or "Convert Image".
- Open Shortcuts and create a new shortcut.
- Set it to receive PDFs from the Share Sheet (look for the shortcut's details or settings and turn on Show in Share Sheet).
- Add the Make Image from PDF Page action.
- Add Convert Image and set the format to JPEG.
- Add Save to Photo Album, or a Save File action if you prefer the Files app.
- Open a PDF in Files, tap Share, and run your shortcut.
Shortcuts is powerful but takes a few minutes to set up, and behavior can change between iOS releases. For a one-off conversion, Method 1 is quicker.
Method 3: Take a screenshot of the page
For a single page you only need to share quickly, a screenshot works:
- Open the PDF in the Files app or Books and zoom so the page fills the screen.
- Take a screenshot: press the side button and volume up together on iPhones with Face ID, or the side (or top) button and Home button on iPhones with a Home button.
- Tap the preview thumbnail, crop away the status bar and edges, and save it to Photos.
The limits: you capture only what is on screen, resolution is limited to your display, and iPhone screenshots are saved as PNG images rather than JPG. If a form strictly requires a JPG, open our Image Resizer, choose JPEG as the output format, and download the converted file. For multi-page documents, Method 1 is much faster and gives consistent quality.
Which method should you use?
- Whole PDF or several pages: Safari plus the PDF to JPG converter.
- You do this every week: a Shortcuts automation.
- One page, quick share in a chat: a screenshot.
- The JPG must stay under a KB limit: convert, then shrink it with the Image Resizer.
Troubleshooting on iPhone
- Cannot find the download: check Files > Browse > Downloads. Safari's download location can be changed in the Settings app under Safari.
- The PDF will not load: password-protected PDFs cannot be opened by the converter. If you know the password, remove it first with Unlock PDF.
- File over 20MB: split the PDF into smaller parts, then convert each part.
- Very long PDFs feel slow: pages are drawn one by one on your phone, so keep the tab open until every thumbnail appears.
Going the other way: JPG to PDF on iPhone
If you need to turn photos into a single PDF, for example to upload documents to an application portal, use our JPG to PDF converter in Safari. Pick the photos, choose a page size, and download one combined PDF. The Files app can also create a PDF from selected images using its Create PDF option.
iPhone PDF to JPG FAQ
Can I convert PDF to JPG on iPhone without an app?
Yes. Open the PDF Buddy PDF to JPG converter in Safari, pick the PDF from the Files app, and tap Convert to JPG. Each page becomes a JPG you can download. Nothing is installed, no account is needed, and the PDF is processed in your browser rather than uploaded to a server.
Where do downloaded JPGs go on iPhone?
Safari saves downloads to the Files app, usually in a folder called Downloads under iCloud Drive or On My iPhone. You can change the download location in the Settings app under Safari. Downloaded images do not appear in the Photos app until you save them there yourself.
How do I save the converted JPG to Photos?
Open the downloaded JPG in the Files app, tap the Share button, and choose the option to save the image. You can also press and hold a page thumbnail on the converter and save it directly to Photos. Menu wording differs slightly between iOS versions.
Can I convert all pages of a PDF at once on iPhone?
Yes. The converter turns every page into a separate JPG in one pass. Tap Download All to save a single ZIP file, then tap the ZIP in the Files app to expand it into a folder of JPG images named page_1.jpg, page_2.jpg and so on.
Does this work on iPad too?
Yes. The steps are the same in Safari on iPad: tap the upload box, choose the PDF from Files, convert, and download. On iPad you can also drag a PDF from the Files app in Split View straight onto the upload box if your iPadOS version supports drag and drop into Safari.
Is it safe to convert private PDFs on my iPhone?
The converter reads and renders your PDF with PDF.js inside Safari, and the JPG images are created on your phone. Your document is not uploaded to our servers. The page still loads its own scripts, analytics and ads, like most websites, but they do not receive your file.
