• Text becomes pixels. In a PDF, text is usually real text that you can select, search and copy. In a JPG, the same text is part of a picture. You can still read it, but you cannot select or edit it without OCR.
• One page becomes one image. A PDF can hold hundreds of pages in a single file. A JPG holds exactly one image, so a 12-page PDF becomes 12 JPG files.

Macs include Preview, which can save a PDF page as a JPEG. Here is how to turn a PDF into a JPG on a Mac with Preview:

1. Open the PDF in Preview (double-click it, or right-click and choose Open With > Preview).
2. Show the page thumbnails from the View menu and click the page you want.
3. Choose File > Export, set Format to JPEG, adjust the Quality slider and the resolution, and click Save.

The catch is that Preview exports one page at a time, so a 20-page PDF means repeating the export 20 times.
